Aromatherapy & Chakra Alignment

MORE MAGIKAL MUSINGS FROM THE DIVINE HAG

In a time of increasing stress and hard work it is even more important to mindfully look after our whole health.

Feelings of imbalance are exacerbated by the way we now live, which is often out of touch with our emotions and our true nature. Frequently it is our Chakras that are out of alignment, leading us to feelings of confusion and distress.

Aromatherapy, amongst other treatments, can help restore this balance and harmony. The power of Aromatherapy is hard to overstate as it can affect us in so many ways and has a myriad of uses. It can be one of the most gentle and effective ways to restore balance to an imbalanced Chakral system.

Other treatments are colour and crystal therapy and as you read on, I will give the colour and crystal associated with each Chakra. The colours can be useful to concentrate on as a meditation or visualisation tool on your journey to wellness. You can wear a piece of clothing in that colour, bathe in a coloured light or even meditate with candles of this colour.

Each Chakra has corresponding crystals that can also be used as jewellery, ‘worry stones’, or placed on the Chakra during meditation to aid the alignment process.

Chakras have been acknowledged from ancient times as centres of energy within our body and are usually envisioned as whirling vortexes. All are linked and when blocked or working from the wrong frequency, they are perceived as feelings of imbalance, discomfort or even major illness.

It is now understood that we have many Chakras within our energy system, however healers usually concentrate on the seven main Chakras:

I shall start at the bottom as I truly believe that if we are not grounded and in touch with the earth, we cannot function effectively.

ROOT CHAKRA

This Chakra is situated at the base of the spine and extends all the way to our feet. It relates to being grounded and on the Earth. The functioning of this Chakra is crucial for our good heath and it is regarded as the foundation that all other Chakras work upon.

This Chakra is associated with feelings of safety, security and basic needs. It helps us to identify our physical sense of self and it is the foundation on which we live our lives!

Imbalance in the Root Chakra can be indicated by feelings of insecurity and worry regarding our means of survival. It’s important to tune into your physical surroundings and to not just live in the clouds.

One of the most effective ways to work on this Chakra is a foot massage, using a carrier oil such as Jojoba. Mix a few drops of Frankincense and Sandalwood and rub gently into the soles of your feet.

Together, the massage with the properties of the oils will gently restore balance and over time will help to calm and restore this Chakra centre.

Try burning a red candle and using a red crystal such as Ruby alongside meditation to enhance your experience.

After taking this time to self-care, check in with how your whole system reacts, since the renewed balance of this Chakra may make you more aware of other imbalances.

SACRAL CHAKRA

This Chakra is located below the belly button, around two inches below the naval.

The Sacral Chakra is also affected by childhood experiences and is the root of our sexuality and our perception of both the family and self.

Blockages can be perceived as inability to empathise with others, depression, lack of self-esteem and and a lack of libido. Conversely, an overactive Sacral Chakra can result in an addiction to sex, a lack of self-care and lack of empathy for others. Balancing oils for the sacral would be Sandalwood, Clary Sage and Rose, which are incredibly nurturing and best used in an oil burner or vaporizer.

You can also use a mixture of Sandalwood, Vetiver and Orange in equal measure, again best used in an oil burner or vapouriser.

The colour associated with this Chakra is orange and a lovely crystals to use would be Carnelian and Amber.

SOLAR PLEXUS CHAKRA

This Chakra is literally located in the solar plexus and this is where we carry our essence. When this Chakra is damaged we quite literally feel that we have been kicked in the stomach.

This Chakra is out of alignment when we feel unable to move forward or make decisions, have a crisis of confidence, feelings of dependence and a lack of self-discipline.

The most effective way to rebalance this Chakra is to light an oil burner and if feeling unfocused and dependent, add 2 drops of Bergamot, 4 of Lemon and 2 of Ginger. This mix will help to refocus and uplift the spirits, enabling the Chakra to realign and enhance overall mood and health.

If, however, feelings of overconfidence are at the forefront and clouding judgement, then a mix of Juniper and Cedarwood in equal measure would be useful.

The colour associated with this Chakra is yellow so burning a yellow candle to focus on whilst meditating and choosing crystals such as Citrine and Tigers Eye will enhance the healing.

HEART CHAKRA

This Chakra is not located over the heart, but rather in the centre of the chest in the heart region.

When the Heart Chakra is too open, you may have feelings of being completely overwhelmed by your feelings and have an inability to cope; feelings of hypersensitivity and being continually hurt can overwhelm.

When the centre is blocked or out of alignment, then feelings of jealousy, rage, codependency and withdrawal can be experienced.

My recommendation for the rebalancing of this Chakra would be a gentle hand massage, allowing connection to be re-established.

Damage to this Chakra can be long standing and profound, and coping with it may have altered the way of being. With gentle work, the balance can be restored.

Geranium Marjoram and Ylang Ylang will work together to open up the blocked heart Chakra and gently help restore the appreciation of life. To rebalance the damaged and grieving heart centre, I would also recommend the gentle healing properties of Rose, Lavender and Carnation.

The two colours associated with this Chakra are green and pink and both resonate the healing energy to assist with the rebalance of this Chakra. The associated crystals are Rose Quartz and Jade. Choose the one that most appeals and carry in your pocket. These can be used as ‘worry stones’ when feelings of overwhelm are beginning.

THROAT CHAKRA

This Chakra is, as noted, located in the throat and is often shown as being at an upwards angle. Being at such a narrow point in the physical body, it is vulnerable and can have an an effect not only on the throat area, but also the ears and the upper back.

Imbalances in this Chakra can manifest as being too talkative in an uncontrolled manner, being unable to keep a secret and discomfort in the ears, e.g. Tinnitus type conditions.

Conversely, there can be a fear of talking, a painful throat or a feeling of having no voice.

A mix containing 4 drops of Camomile,  2 drops of Myrrh and 4 drops of Basil can calm an overactive throat Chakra. This can be added to a base oil such as Almond or Coconut and gently rubbed into the shoulders.

To stimulate a sluggish Throat Chakra, 4 drops of Rosemary, 2 drops of Peppermint and 4 drops of Orange can be used in a vaporizer or added to bath water. You can also add these to a carrier oil and use as a bath oil, gently infusing through the Chakra and helping to realign.

The colour associated with this Chakra is blue so a blue scarf at the throat is helpful, as is using Lapis Lazuli or Turquoise crystals to enhance the treatment.

THIRD EYE CHAKRA

This is located in the forehead between the eyebrows and is the Chakra that governs imagination and intuition, as well as being associated with sleep, dreaming and psychic ability.

When this Chakra is blocked, it manifests in a lack of motivation, a feeling of sluggishness and an inability to focus on what is important to you.

To clear, I would recommend an oil burner or vaporizer containing 4 drops each of Rosemary and Peppermint and 2 of Sandalwood; this should gently clear away blockages.

Indications of this Chakra being too active are excessively vivid dreams and day dreaming.

To realign, I recommend a head massage or a bath using Roman Camomile, Rose and Neroli, with 2 drops of each in a carrier oil of your choice.

The colour associated with this Chakra is purple/indigo and the crystal is Amethyst.

CROWN CHAKRA

This is located on the top of the head and is quite literally our crown. This Chakra is said to be our conduit to the Universe and higher states of consciousness.

When this Chakra is blocked, feelings of cynicism and discontent manifest, as does a propensity to overthink and become stuck in cycles of negative thought.

Oils to help with this negative cycle and to help open this Chakra are Cypress, Bergamot and Lemon. Used in a mix of 4/2/4 this mix can be used in an oil burner or vapourised to great effect.

An overactive crown Chakra is indicated by constant over anxiety and thoughts, continual planning and never managing to do as well as excessive concern about religion/thoughts of spirituality.

A mix containing Frankincense, Rose and Geranium in equal measure can either be added to a vapourizer or mixed with water and sprayed on to the pillow to aid sleep whilst also realigning this Chakra.

The associated crystals would be Clear Quartz and Serpentine and one of the most effective ways to discern what might be of balance is to do a short restful meditation with them. Take 5 minutes and whilst lying or sitting,  gently breathe down into your tummy and think about the areas in life that, to you, feel out of balance or out of control. Then use the recommended oils and techniques to help regain balance. This is best practiced daily and a journal can be kept to monitor progress and shift.
